Question on Rules of Golf:

Are you allowed to repair/fix the hole before or during play if there was damage from flag, club etc?
--William C. from Warwick, RI

Hi William. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

That's a very good question. The hole can be easily damaged by a ball mark when someone almost holes or does hole the shot and it can be damaged by the flag due to someone not being careful as they pull it out.

Usually you would repair it after everyone finishes putting. Be careful not to touch anything even the hole if it's in your line of putt. If however the damage is bad enough to change the dimensions of the hole, which would in turn affect your ability to hole the putt, then you are supposed to call for a rules official or tournament committee member to fix it. If they aren't around then you can fix it yourself. Always announce it and discuss it with your competitors so they know what you are up to.

I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks!
