Question on Rules of Golf:

Hi Maria,
I really enjoy and learn a lot from your website. My question today deals with the correct Tee box to use. I play to an 11.5 HC index and select the tee box I used based on slope (around mid 130s) and rating (just under 72). I do not worry about distance too much but do stay under 7000 yards. My golfing buddies always want to play forward tees even though they are capable of driving a ball just about as far as I can (between 200 -220 yds). What is the correct way to select the appropriate tee box.?: Thank you. Patrick Faivre

Hi Patrick. Thanks for the question.

You know there is no perfect answer to that question. The easy answer is to say play the tees where you can shoot around par. For example, if you can't beat the course from the red tees, then why are you playing the white? This of course is not very feasible as most golfers, men included, can't shoot even par from the red tees. So with that in consideration most golfers will want to be able to hit their driver several times and if they play too short, they would not get that opportunity.

It's really a matter of where you want to play, what you can handle and which tees won't make you slow up play behind you!
