Question on Shot Making:

What is easier to improve, hitting it straighter or longer?

It is easier to hit it straighter by far. If you think about it, the clubface tells the ball where to go. If you hit the ball with a square clubface it is for the most part going to travel straight. Obviously though, if there is a swing path that is severly off, that will also influence the direction. If you can find a way to deliver a square face to the ball, not only will you hit it straighter, but more solid as well. This will also increase distance.

Hitting it longer is much more difficult in most cases. When I get a student to improve his or her technique, obviously they increase distance because they are wasting less energy in their swing and applying more to the ball with square contact. To see a huge jump in distance though, can necessitate many factors with the most important being and increase in swing speed. An increase in swing speed can require changes to the body i.e., more flexibility and strength, changes to equipment and improving technique.
