Irons

Irons make up the bulk of the clubs in a player's bag. The heads are made of steel or iron and have a flat, lofted face with grooves. They are numbered from a 10 iron or pitching wedge down to a 1 iron. Various wedges (sand, gap, pitch, lob) are also included in the iron group. Irons are shorter and typically easier to control than woods. To hit irons well golfers need to understand how to return the face (front) to impact with the correct angle (loft) and alignment (direction) they desire for the shot at hand.

  • Play Irons at the Bottom of Your Arc

Play irons just forward of center. That way you will trap the ball at the bottom point in the arc if you are properly shifting your weight. It doesn't matter which iron you are hitting. If you are shifting your weight, the bottom of the arc will be forward of center. Remember, you need to hit down on irons to get the ball to pop back up in the air, so trapping it at the bottom point of the arc is crucial.
