Over the Top

Over the Top refers to when a player's club is swung outside or in front of their swing plane line on the downswing. It is one of the most common swing faults in the game of golf and results in one of the most common ball flight errors - the slice. To accomplish this the player's hands and arms swing away from their body on the downswing causing a loss of power. The cause is usually the player's shoulders spinning open too quickly and their lower body does not initiate the downswing.

  • Address the Ball With Your Rear Side Lower

When addressing the ball, make sure that your rear side sits lower at address just as your rear hand sits lower on the grip. Your hips and shoulders should run parallel to each other and tilt away from your target. This means your right hip and your right shoulder will sit lower than your left hip and left shoulder at address. Setting up in this manner facilitates and inside/out take away, so it's a great thing to double check if you are having problems swinging outside/in.
