Ball Sitting Under the Lip of a Bunker

There are bad breaks in golf and there are really bad breaks! When your ball settles under the lip of a bunker it is really bad luck and prevents a challenging situation. As with all trouble shots the key is to initiate damage control and get the ball back into play with one stroke. This is the type of situation where you don't want to try to be a hero, but simply just get the ball out. In today's featured video Jay Delsing, PGA Tour Veteran will demonstrate how to execute this shot rather than just hitting and hoping. By knowing what to do you can avoid disaster. The key points to remember here are:

  • Use your 60 degree wedge or your sand wedge.
  • Get yourself in a good balanced position with one foot in the bunker and one foot out.
  • Open the face wide open to get considerable loft and try to hit two inches behind the ball.
  • Swing hard and try to leave your club in the sand. This will help you to avoid hitting the lip too hard and incurring a wrist injury.
  • Prepare for extra roll. Because you have to take a chunk of sand to push the ball out, you will not get much spin on the ball.

Watch Maria explain and PGA Tour Veteran Jay Delsing demonstrate how to save par from 100 yards and in by learning how to get the ball out of the bunker when it lodges under the lip.
