Putting with a Sand Wedge

In today's video tip we talk about putting with your sand wedge or as some refer to it..."belly your wedge". This is a creative little shot that is a bit of secret. I often find a lot of my students have never heard of it. When you encounter the unfortunate situation of having your ball roll up against the first cut of the fringe (bordering the green and the fringe) or against the first cut of rough (bordering the fringe and the first cut of rough) it is extremely difficult to pull off a solid shot with your putter. What I see with most players is that they try to do one of 2 things:

  1. They try to hit down on the ball and this forces the ball to pop up and oftentimes the putter gets caught in the grass.
  2. They catch it too high on the ball and as they top it, they actually push the ball down forcing it to bounce back up.

Either way, there is no way to get a good, smooth, top spin roll unless you get lucky and hit the ball perfectly. With your sand wedge or lob wedge however you can intentionally blade the ball with the leading edge of the clubface and hit the middle of the ball which will give you a true roll. The leading edge cuts right through the grass and prevents you from getting stuck. Now that you know the secret, it's simply down to practicing it enough to control the distance.

Watch Maria explain and PGA Tour Veteran Jay Delsing demonstrate how to save strokes from 100 yards and in by learning this little greenside trick.
