The Flop Shot

A lot of golfers fear the flop shot and think there is some sort of magic skill that tour pros use in order to flop their ball on the green and get it to stick. Obviously certain situations are more difficult than others and a good example would be when you have to shoot over a bunker or mound and yet have very little landing room on the green between the fringe and the pin. In today's featured video Tour Veteran Jay Delsing and I will demonstrate how in most situations a flop shot is really not all that difficult and is actually quite simple. The first thing you should do is get a lob wedge (typically 60 degrees) if you don't already have one. Having a lob wedge will save you from having to lay the face of another wedge wide open which is quite awkward for most players to get comfortable with. The key points to take remember when hitting a lob shot are:

  • Make a long fluid swing with confidence.
  • Set up with a square face. If you have a wedge with enough loft there is no need to get cute and play around with opening the face too much. Just let the ball get in the way of your swing.
  • If you are on a slope, make sure to set your shoulders to match the terrain.

Watch Maria explain and PGA Tour Veteran Jay Delsing demonstrate how to easily save strokes from 100 yards and in and learn how to hit the flop shot with confidence.
