The Putt-Chip

The featured video for today is about a shot called the Putt-Chip. The Putt-Chip is the most simple shot in golf outside of an actual putt and was made popular by Phil Rodgers. It is a shot that comes in handy when you are really close to the green, but cannot putt the ball and yet need to hit a soft controllable shot. A perfect example is when you've ended up on a downhill slope and have a green that's rolling away from you. In that situation a traditional bump and run would be a bit aggressive and ir would be hard to stop the ball. What you need rather is a shot that is going to carry just enough to get on the putting surface, yet check up softly with some backspin and little roll. The keys to remember on this shot are:

  • You are simply making a putting stroke with an iron club.
  • Set up just like you would with a putt and use your putting grip, but lean a bit more on your front foot.
  • You can use any club from a wedge all the way to a fairway wood depending on how much you need the ball to roll.
  • If your ball is on a slope make sure to match your shoulders and hips with the slope.

Watch Maria explain and PGA Tour Veteran Jay Delsing demonstrate how to save strokes from 100 yards and in with this simple little greenside shot.
