The Long Putt

Getting to the green can sometimes feel like work, but unfortunately when you've left yourself with a putt 40 feet or longer, your work is nowhere near done. Today's featured video clip will show you how to avoid 3 putts and get down in 2 more often when faced with lengthy first putts.

Most professionals will tell you that they try to hole every putt, even long ones and if they are going to miss, they expect to leave themselves with a tap in. To get to this level and gain confidence I believe you need to focus as much on pre-shot routine and preparation as on technique. The main keys you need to be aware of on lengthy putts are:

  • Establish a good pre-shot routine
  • Focus more on your preparation for the shot by taking the time needed to assess the break and the speed.
  • Pay close attention to the high and low points of the green as you approach it.
  • Take the time to get down low and look for inconsistencies, grain and other imperfections that could affect the roll of your ball. Look at the putt from both sides of the hole.
  • Commit to your decisions, erase any technical thoughts and let your senses be guided by the feel of your practice stroke.

Watch Maria explain and PGA Tour Veteran Jay Delsing demonstrate how save strokes from 100 yards and in and avoid 3 putts by mastering putts outside of 40 feet.
