Ball Below Your Feet in a Bunker

In today's video feature Jay Delsing and I discuss one of the worst breaks you will ever get on a golf course, but we will show you how to initiate damage control and avoid high numbers. We demonstrate what you should do when your ball is below your feet in the bunker. This is especially tough if your feet have to be outside the bunker. The challenge is even greater if you are a tall player. The most common miss in this situation is a topped shot. It's very easy to raise up and come back to the ball taller than you were at address. The key points to focus on when you encounter this situation are:

  • Take a longer shafted club if you don't need the loft of your wedge. In other words, if you aren't in front of a high lip using the length of another club will make things easier. You can still open the face to get added loft.
  • Make sure to have a wide stance as this will lower you closer to the ground. Bend your knees as well.
  • Keep your focus on just getting the ball out. It doesn't have to be a perfect shot.
  • Make sure to remain in the posture you established at address by staying down through the swing.

Watch Maria explain and PGA Tour Veteran Jay Delsing demonstrate how to save strokes from 100 yards and in and get out of this sticky situation without adding unnecessary strokes to your score.
